Post Cinco De Mayo Thoughts for May the 4th be with You Day

When did Star Wars become a cult?

We first realized something was wrong in 1999 with the fanbois coming out in their Obi Wan garb for The Phantom Menace.

We haven't worn a Star Wars costume since, I dunno, 1984?

[What about Mrs. Stroock. Ha! -Ed]

Me, we were too young in 1983 for Princess Leia to imprint herself on our brain.

Anyway we're knocking cosplay or even Star Wars geekdom.

Star Wars used to be three special and precious films, hence May the 4th be With You.

Then came the prequel disasters.*

When Disney hired JJ Abrams to run the next trio of films we had great hope and was rewarded with The Force Awakens. This was a solid B/B+ film which hit all the right spots. That said over time we like it less and less. The Force Awakens is really just a reboot or 'soft reboot' in Red Letter Media parlance. Then came Rogue One, which we loved and love. And then, well, The Last Jedi. We have no idea what to think of the Solo trailer.

So now Star Wars is a franchise outside the original time line. We are not opposed to this. There's plenty of fodder in that universe - like Rogue One, which was such a good idea and so well executed. But you know what else is franchised? Comic Book Man, Superhero Man, a whole host of movies we've never seen.**

The fact is Star Wars is no longer precious.

*Does the term 'prequel' come into use with The Phantom Menace? We think so.

**Seriously, we've barely seen Iron Man.
