The Palin Threat that Was

Yesterday we proposed an alt-history scenario where Sarah Palin was a strong candidate in 2016.

Alas it was not to be.

Sarah Palin goes to church, she shoots, she has a funny accent* she has absolutely nothing in common with the kind of girl journo that ends up in our novels with names like Aggressive Blonde or Red Dye Job.

Palin was a governor and before that mayor of the midsized city of Wasilla. She had a decidedly unglamorous background, bouncing around several colleges, eloping when she found out she was pregnant...Unlike Hillary Clinton, or say Senator Kamala Harris** Sarah Palin did not need to trade off the name of a famous man.

Sarah Palin should have been a feminist heroine in 2008.

Instead the left destroyed Palin. She was good on the stump with a fantastic bio. Becuase of her life story and media skills Palin had a real knack for reaching out to other moms; we called it 'Gal Power'. That made Palin an existential threat to the left/liberal conventional wisdom.

Liberal men hate strong women, especially strong conservative women. Naturally liberal women hated her more and for a set of complex reasons.

First off, Palin's prettier than most liberal jounos. She was able to pull this off despite having a real career and five kids.

Let's dive into the family issue. When Palin found out she was pregnant at 41 she didn't immediately run to Planned Parenthood, not even when she found our her son has Down Syndrome. And when her 16 year old daughter Bristol got pregnant Palin didn't ship off someplace for a secret abortion.  Liberal women could never forgive Palin for that.

And let's be honest about liberal gals. Most of them are married to fellow urbanites, curly haired, glasses wearing, thoughtful white color types who when confronted with a flat tire think, 'Time to call AAA.'

Mr. Todd Palin is a good looking man made hot by the fact he's a steel worker, worked the oil fields and races dog sleds for fun.*** When a creepy journo moved in next to the Palins, Todd and his boys put a fence a few days later.

No wonder the left hates her.

Oh, and by the way, Sarah Palin never said, 'I can see Russia from my house.' That was Tina Fey playing Sarah Palin.

*Which we think is adorable.
**Concubine of SF Mayor Willie Brown.

  1. The city's population was 7,831 at the 2010 census. Couple thousand more since then. How do you call a small town with less than 10K a midsized city?
