Here's to you, Mr. Robinson

Today is Jackie Robinson's birthday.

For foreign readers, Jackie Robinson was the first black player in Major League Baseball. His signing by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 was a civil rights milestone. He was a great player and eventually inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sports often led the way.

College football is huge in America, especially down south. You know what finally got the southern schools to desegregate? The integrated Yankee schools were whipping them. A way of life may be important, but we're talking college football here.

As it happens former NFL quarterback Warren Moon was on WFAN yesterday. He was a trailblazer himself, and the first great black quarterback in the NFL.

We had forgotten that 'black QBs' used to be a thing.

As unbelievable as it seems, coaches used to insist that blacks didn't have what it takes to play QB.

Now nobody cares.

The issue is so irrelevant we're not even sure how to explain it here.

  1. Don't forget Doug Williams either. Moon was my favorite as a kid, BUT the incredible Bills comeback victory still sticks in my craw.
