So with the pair of alternate history short stories we're working on about an indy mid-century Hawaii we've done a lot of research on the islands.
Indy Hawaii was pretty much what you've heard about and seen in the movies, an island group full of free-wheeling Polynesians welcoming visitors with open arms.

The islands truly were a tropical paradise where the Western notion of work was unknown and unnecessary.
The Hawaiians had some strange customs, some abhorrent customs, one of them being infanticide. It was quite common for any number of reasons, religious, superstition, or just plain laziness.
We bring this up becuase of the recent defeat of the senate's 'born alive' bill.
Decent folk assume protecting babies, keeping them alive if you will, is natural to the human condition. But it's not.
Just ask Virginia governor Ralph Northam:
If a mother is in labor…the infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and mother.
