Seven Seats of Labour

Labour's like Shas or United Torah Judaism now, a minor party that can be brought into a government. Except they can't. Likud would never bring Labour into a government, at least not under the spiteful and vindictive Bibi, and the Blue and Whites can take them for granted.

Labour bet everything on the Oslo Process. The unraveling began when Prime Minister Rabin* was assassinated in 1995. Labour's leadership fell to perpetual loser Shimon Peres, who did what he does best and lost to...Netanyahu in 1996. Ehud Barak beat Bibi in 1999 but failed in spectacular fashion at the Camp David talks of 2000. Two years of bloody war followed, of which them main political casualty was Labour. In a special 2001 election Arial Sharon**, till then a pariah, annihilated Barak 65-35. Labour has not ruled since.

This is a sad decline, really. Labour is the party of secular Zionism, the party of left wing Judaism, the party of Jewish Democrats, the party of David Ben Gurion. Labour founded Israel and was the nation's permanent governing party until 1976.

Last night Labour won seven seats.

*For whom we would have voted.
**Greatest Jew since Charleton Heston.
