We've decided to re-watch Star Trek The Next Generation.
At one point TNG was our favorite TV show. We've noted before it was directly responsible for us picking up a pen and writing in 1990.
We watched throughout the show's run and then in reruns during the 90's. In the 2000's we drifted away.
Last night we watched The Best of Both Worlds Parts one and two. This is the epic clash between the Enterprise and the Borg, a season three cliffhanger leading to the season four opener.
The Enterprise battles the technologically superior Borg, who kidnap Picard and use his knowledge against Star Fleet. Only the ingenuity of the crew saves the ship from destruction. They fight, run, hide, and fight some more, chasing the Borg all the way back to sector 001.
Within the overall story arc lays the question of Riker's place in Star Fleet. He's been offered a command but is not sure if he wants to leave the Enterprise. 'What are you still doing here?' Picard asks him. Then Star Fleet sends a young go-getter Borg specialist, Lt. Commander Shelby, who wants Riker's job. Worse, she reminds Riker of the way he used to be.
The Best of Both Worlds is a masterclass in writing.
