We had a rough week with The Great Salvation of 1976. But the MS is read through. We cut a couple of scenes leaving us with a short chapter 9 and no ending chapter. There's still plenty of work to do. At this point, we're not quite sure how to end 76. Our sense is the novel is either too long or too short. The MS stands at 70,000 words. By comparison, The Great Nuclear War of 1975 is 80,000 words.
So, what do we have at the end? The reconstruction committee talking about the need for regular elections in 1978 laying the groundwork for 1980. We have Rockefeller getting the word of his Electoral College victory, and him flying out to the temporary congressional seat at the Greenbrier to give his inauguration. There's also a Matt scene which we haven't written.
By lunch on Friday we decided there was little more that we could do to 76, so we put it down and decided to edit some old magazine articles in preparation for Substack. We'll be posting some articles this weekend and throughout the rest of the month. If reader(s) want to see 'em, they'll pay for the privilege. Five quid a month, mate.
Since we're burned out on nuclear war, we'll be switching back to World War 1990: The Weser this week. We haven't opened the MS in 2 months which will make for fertile ground. The Weser stands at 60,000 words and should look great by next Saturday.
