Battle is a picturesque English town of old buildings, tight streets, tiny stores and the like.
The town also has a small Battle Abbey Museum. This was our first stop, and to our amusement the curator asked after our accents. They don't get many Yanks there. Our most helpful curator gave us a quick tour of the museum's interesting exhibits, including artifacts from Roman times. He went out of his way to show us the only medieval battle artifact ever found at the battle-site, an old axe head. We did well at the gift shop.
From there we went to Battle Abbey. This is the great abbey and church William built to commemorate his victory and curry favor with the Church. It is a most impressive medieval structure.
Of course we visited the battlefield. One can take a self guided tour, but having written extensively about the battle, and with six children in tow, we were content to simply walk across the north end of the site.
From here Harold's army stood against William's, which gathered about where the stand of trees lie in the background. That's really all there is to the battlefield.
We did well at the giftshop, better than the kids.
