That's Funny: Slavo-Judeo Edition

The best line from the very underrated Dragnet movie:
Let's do a deep dive on this, yo.

You see, comedy is supposed to be about real life. It's one of the reasons we like funeral home jokes so much. Boy Ed would have fun with that one.

In the above scene real life intrudes. Dragnet came out in 1987, after 40 years of the Israelis kicking the ever-living-crap out of the Arabs. So Christopher Plummer here just assumes Joe Friday means the Israelis. Throw in the fact that this film takes place in LA, and the Israeli line adds just a touch of Jewish kitsch, you get comedy gold.

You know that scene in the opening of Polish Storm where Boyle and his platoon are rounding up Slovak troublemakers for burning down a Gypsy encampment and the Slovaks just don't understand why the Americans are upset about it? It's a joke. It's supposed to be funny. The Slovak guy is just shrugging in confusion and explaining, 'StB secret police is gone, no? Why would you not burn Gypsy encampment to ground? You Americans...'

  1. So this is what Capt. Von Trapp has been up to since refusing service in the Navy of the Third Reich?
