When the 1988 presidential campaign began in earnest, Democrat Michael Dukakis had a 17 point lead. Then Bush ground Dukakis into dust and sold him off as fiber supplement*.

Bush and campaign manager Lee Atwater(PBUH) made Dukakis look like a lily-livered, soft on crime easy on the commies northeastern liberal.

The GOP wouldn't have a candidate as tough until, well, Donald Trump.
