6-24-19 in New Jersey

Not all are pleased about the creation of a school for bilingual students:

When Trenton opens its brand new high school this fall, 400 students will instead be sent to a newly created school designed for bilingual speakers. The change, some district officials said, is designed to bridge the gaps in the curriculum for English language learning students, but community members say its a modern form of segregation.

The plan for the Trenton Global Academy, a school specifically for high school English language learning students and newly immigrated students, was approved by the Trenton Board of Education in April — the first time the community was made aware of the initiative, according to the Trenton Education Association.

By bilingual they mean 'doesn't speak English'. Gee, wonder what they do speak. Indians and Chinese learn English before coming here.

They have a point, actually, at least under the law.  We don't think herding the ESL kids into a separate school is a good way to integrate them into the community.

A decade ago we were more or less a permanent sub in Bernards High, Bernardsville New Jersey. The town had a growing Paraguayan population and every year new students were placed in an ESL program and paired with a bilingual student. They learned English quick.
