Golden Age TV Drama

In Harpers, Adam Wilson asks what was the Golden Age of TV.

Most would agree that we're in the Golden Age right now, what with the dozens and dozens of cable-dramas.

We don't watch network TV anymore. Younger reader(s) we can assure you drama today is much better than 30 or 40 years ago.

The 70's-80's night time soap won't hold up today at all, right? Dallas? Dynasty? Think of the shoulder pads and hair. A few summers ago we reviewed Battlestar Galactica, which needs controlling for 70's content. CHiPs? It will take reader(s) an hour to get the openning theme out of their heads. Du-du-du-du-du...du-duuuuuuuuu! Eight is Enough? Good god all mighty, what a Millennial Wokescold could do with Dick Van Patten. Don't make this blog say it, The Dukes of Hazard. How about Hillstreet Blues, about a bunch of gritty cops in a gritty northern city -hey, let's be careful out there. Star Trek may be the most important TV drama ever made and it's unwatchable today.

What shows will endure, reader(s) are saying them as we write them, The Sopranos.

What shows had a cultural impact? Sex and the City.

What else? Is anyone really gonna remember Six Feet Under in twenty years? Oh you think so do you? Hey, remember that hit drama from the 80's that everyone talked about? Heh, heh Remember 30 Something?

Wilson doesn't get to Game of Thrones till the end. Which tells us what he thinks of GoT. Is there a prejudice against swords? We recently saw a list of the 100 greatest films of the 21st century and Lord of the Rings wasn't on it. Which is a snobbist joke. Not #1, fine. But not #100?
