Our 12 year old niece got a guitar for her birthday and she brought it by for us to tune and show her the ropes.

So we taught her the first three strings up to the 3rd fret and told her once she learns that she'll be able to play the D chord.

Then we gave her the very same Mel Bay Guitar for Beginners book our guitar instructor gave us, and gave her more or less the same talk.  Fifteen years old now, the book has our instructor's marks and notations. 'The book...' we whispered as if we had just stepped out of a cornfield in Iowa... 'The book...'
