We spent a lot of time at the gym this year. A lot.
After our cardiologist, the one who saved our life in 2015 by inserting a stent in our artery and clearing a 95% blockage, said our cholesterol was creeping up. We were in the mid-500'.* we join a gym in 2018. This year we got there 3 or 4 times a week. Ideally Mon/Tues and Thurs/Fri. We found mornings worked best, even though afternoons make more sense.
We were lifting weights but stopped as we didn't like how we felt afterwards. Instead we're doing an hour plus of cardio. Fifteen minutes on the rowing machine, 15 on the rope pully, 15 on the bike or Stairmaster. Before all that we do the treadmill as we've always found this the hardest. At the start of this year we were happy with 15 minutes. Now half an hour is the norm. Last week did 45 minutes during each session. Forty-five minutes. We're amazed. Comes out to 3 miles.
At the beginning of 2019 we weighed 255, at the end 249. Our face has thinned out and so have our sides. We're just about able to wear size 38 pants comfortably. In 2015 were a 42. Our cholesterol count is back down to the mid-300s. We're just about in the best shape of our life. We didn't exercise much in college and we smoked besides. Physically we feel great.
For 2020 we're thinking we should be gradually increasing treadmill speed. We might think about getting back into the weights.
*1000+ on that infamous day. Don't look up what safe levels are.
