Joe Rogan conducted a very interesting interview with a very interesting man, David Lee Roth. For you young reader(s) interested in the creative arts, we suggest listening to what Roth has to say.
Roth talks about 'contribution'. What contributed to you? That is, what are your influences? 'How'd you get there?' Rogan asked how long it took Van Halen to write Runnin' with the Devil. Roth goes on, 'If you watch a thousand movies, many of them multiple times. If you've played thousands and thousands of hours....if you've read, I don't know, 500 books. Tried to memorize all the good parts....take about 18 minutes....the whole point is not 18 minutes, it's everything that led up to that.'
By the many arms of Vishnu is that ever right. To Defend the Earth isn't so much a novel of alien invasion but a novel that describes what influenced the way we would see an alien invasion. That would be War of the Worlds (1953), Independence Day, Jerry Pournelle's and Larry Niven's Footfall all through the prism of a Tom Clancy technothriller.
So how long did that take? Well, sometimes we can crank out a thousand words in about 18 minutes.
Not kidding.
