Super Bowl Week/ 80's Revival Part III

As noted yesterday the 1985 Chicago Bears certainly had some personalities.

Start with head coach Mike Ditka who was the best example of a fire breathing,  prove to me you're not a woman, head coach the NFL has had this side of Vince Lombardi. There was/is still some controversy over who was more responsible for the Bears' defensive greatness, with many giving credit to defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan inventor of the 46 defense. Of course Buddy Ryan went on to coach the Philadelphia Eagles where he won a lot of regular season games but zero post season games. Ryan was pure, distilled evil. Don't touch it. Anyway, a lot of players got fed up with Ditka after a while.

Like 'Punky' quarterback Jim McMahon, who was a great example of 80's era rock the boat uber-cool. Just check out this commercial, 'Outrageousness!'

Moving on, we have 6-2 330 pound (all DLs and OLs are that big now) defensive lineman William 'the refrigerator' Perry. The Fridge was a sensation all his own. About midway through the season Ditka got the idea to put him in as half back during short yardage situations, which was totally cool.

A lot of people didn't like all the personality on the Bears, but everyone loved running back Walter Payton. 'Sweetness' as he was called, was a long time veteran who played on some bad teams but won at the end of his career. He was probably the greatest running back since Jim Brown. Payton died of cancer in 1999.
