We counselled patience with Governor Kristi Noem and her veto of the women's sports bill. Through patience we've seen that Noem is taking bad advice from the usual GOP corporate lickspittles. Sure, her mishandling of this situation is just one mistake, but it's a yuuuge mistake. We're glad. This was a clarifying moment, a character test, and Noem failed. And to think she was one of the Tea Party stars way back in 2010. Exit question: can she recover?
When dealing with complex and controversial social issues, all one can do is lead. In 1948, when the generals told President Truman it'd be a bad idea to desegregate the military he said, 'Look at the seal, General. See what it says? Commander-in-Chief. It's done. If you don't like it, you can resign.' That, by the way, is exactly what President Clinton (for whom we voted in 1992, it was just time) should have done with gays in the military instead of his cowardly 'don't ask, don't tell' policy.
Governor Noem should have said, 'I don't give a good goddamn what the NCAA thinks. What's the point in participating in the NCAA if women's sports are destroyed by transgendered weirdos who think they're chicks? Fine, go. In fact, here's my other executive order forbidding state offices from cooperating with the NCAA and other sports bodies that won't protect women's athletics. Bye.' Be militantly normal, thanks Colonel Schlichter.
But in truth, it doesn't really matter. As the Parliamentary operative said in Serenity, we're fighting a war we've already lost. Don't kid yourself. When did the right ever win a culture war? Ever? America is going to have to see the destruction of women's sports for things to change,
