L'Shona Tova, Happy Rosh Hashana, Happy New Year. The year is 5782. Tonight we'll be attending live services at the synagogue for the first time since March of 2020.
The Jerusalem Post tells us that the Hebrews have been fecund: 'Ahead of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year, new statistics published by the Jewish Agency showed that there are 15.2 million Jews in the world, up from 15.1 million last year.' There are 6.9 million Jews living in Israel and 6 million in the United States. After that, the nations with largest Jewish population by order are France, Canada, Britain, Argentina, Russia, Germany, Australia. It took 75 years to get back to the 1938 population level, only the world population has tripled since then.
Three quarters of the book cases and books are removed from the basement. We have a process. First we put the books in plastic bins and lug these to the utility room. Then we unscrew the cases from the walls and haul them over to same. From there the books are thrown back on the book cases. This has been our workout for the last few days.
It looks like most of the books that got waterlogged are unsalvageable. Our Roman and Greek history sections are wiped out. It's not a big deal, these were mostly Penguin classics. But still... We are trying to rescue a hardcover copy of Plutarch our grandfather gave us.
We just now learned that a magazine article we composed for a limey magazine long ago is being prepared for publication.
Below, you're pre-9/11 Monday Metal:
An album we once listened to a lot but slipped our consciousness around 2004. We hadn't heard this for 15 years till a few days ago. We're no Springsteen fan, but he nailed it here. It was jarring for long time looking at Manhattan. That harmonica is a primal scream.
