From the Foreign Desk: Sir John A MacDonald

Wait, the Canadian Parliament gave a Standing Ovation to WHO???

Trudeau is in the habit of calling anyone he disagrees with a fascist, racist, homophobe, etc.  And yes, he’s claimed that his opponents are Nazis (note the Trucker Convoy).  When a Jewish, Conservative MP made comments that supported the truckers, he stated that she was supporting Nazis.  So, Trudeau comparing someone to a Nazi is not exactly unusual.  Clearly, he’s trying to imply that anyone who disagrees with him is so far beyond the pale that they should not be listened to or engaged, simply shut up and shut down.  The irony is not lost on me.

Well, last Friday Zelenskyy came to Ottawa and gave a speech to Parliament.  Needless to say, Trudeau and his supporters were giddy with excitement, since rubbing shoulders with Zelenskyy would be great PR for Trudeau’s Liberals.  Except things went a bit wrong during the whole invitation to Parliament.  Speaker of the House Anthony Rota (representing Nipissing – Temiskaming) pointed out a constituent of his in the Visitor’s Gallery, a 98-year-old man who “fought against the Russians”.

Just as in the US, it is not unusual for Members of Parliament to single out a constituent and it is not unusual for Parliament to give them a round of applause.  The problem was the 98-year-old (Yaroslav Hunka) was not just any person who fought against the Russians but someone who fought against them in World War 2.  When Canada was allied with the Soviet Union.  To make matters worse, this was not someone who was conscripted into the Wehrmacht but someone who joined the SS.  You had to volunteer to join the SS, which this man did.  And served in a unit (The Galicia Division) known for atrocities.  How did this happen?

Personally, I think it was a comedy of errors.  First, there are Canadians serving in the Ukraine as volunteers.  The problem is they are considered mercenaries and in Canadian politics the mercenaries are icky.  So, any of those people were out.  Trudeau’s Liberals would not be caught dead associating themselves with soldiers or mercenaries, especially Canadian ones.  Young, military age men?  Absolutely not!  They had to find someone else.  Someone not tainted with the whole “present day military” thing.  Liberals believe they’re all racists, fascists, etc.  So, the Speaker of the House (an elected member who is then elected to be the Speaker) probably talked to his staff and someone knew Hunka and knew he fought against the Russians in World War 2.  Perfect!  A harmless old man.  Bring him out and show Zelenskyy and the world Canada has lots of people who fought, just a long time ago.  And he’s a constituent!  Even better!

As for the Members of Parliament who applauded him, I doubt too many were even listening.  They heard that he fought the Russians and that was good enough.  This only became a problem when someone pointed out (the political aides are so completely divorced from history that they likely don’t know who the SS were) that the “harmless old man” was in fact a possible war criminal.  People are calling for Rota to resign and Trudeau has made a fool of himself on the Canadian and International stage for the second time in less than two weeks.  Also, by honouring a member of the SS, he has shown his support for….wait for it…..Nazis.  This has given ammunition to the Russians who are claiming they invaded the Ukraine to fight Nazis, and here is Zelenskyy and the Canadian Parliament applauding one!  Trudeau is foundering and just can’t seem to do anything right.
