July 2024, the Saga Begins

Happy July, Stroock's Books reader(s). Our initial school year decompression phase is over and today marks the beginning of the second phase of our summer. Tomorrow Mrs. Stroock and the girls fly to Indiana to visit family, leaving us alone with the cats for nearly 2 weeks.  We can already feel the morose solitude of summer syndrome setting in. Look at all the S-words we used.

And Happy Dominion Day, Canadians. One day your proud nation will be liberated from Fidel Castro's son. Alas that day is not today.

World War 1990: Norway is available and climbing up the rankings of its Amazon category (167 in alternate history as of this writing). This is a good place to be. A higher place will be even gooder.

2004 and More: 20 years ago today we were convalescing after a long year teaching at a second-rate Orthodox Yeshiva in Passaic, New Jersey. We were exhausted. Seriously, nobody looks forward to summer more than the teachers, and we were looking forward to our graduate studies and renewed work on A Line Through the Desert. That night we watched the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-4 in extra innings, to put Boston down for the season. This was the infamous Derek Jeter 'into the stands' game. Click the link and watch Jeter come out of those stands after catching a foul ball, cheek and chin bruised and bloodied.

We've no insights into yesterday's French election, though we must say we're delighted. The Regime is vomiting the usual slurs about the so called 'far right'. Whatever man. This Jew is far more comfortable with the 'far right' than what's passing for the left these days. Screw them. The French will hold a runoff next weekend. Steyn seems almost optimistic, at least for Steyn. We've nothing to say but Vive le France! Across the Channel, in just a few days the Tories will be annihilated, and on July 4th too, hopefully for good.

Monday Metal: For a decade now, our sister has put together a family photo calendar. We like to think these will be around in a century. Our descendants will be greeted by this photo header for July:

That's Fever Dog, whom reader(s) will recall we saw open for Wolfmother at the Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia last November. We made a note explaining who and what this/they are to the Stroocks of 2124. 'Wow, great grandpa was sooooo metal.' Here's Fever Dog playing Solid Ground, our favorite. Dig it, man.
