We'll say it again, 'It's time to believe.' 10:30 PM on election night. That was it. That was the moment. Trump's numbers had been gaining momentum since we checked in at 9:00 PM. From there, Trump's numbers moved inexorably forward. It was almost a religious experience. That's the moment we're gonna remember. God damn it, it's 7:13 AM and we're getting emotional just thinking about it. Which will be fodder for another post, or at least another paragraph.
Let's get nostalgic too.
We were listening to Mark Steyn's podcast at the gym yesterday. He reminded us that 30 years ago to the day, after New Gingrich's GOP bombed the Dems back into the electoral stone age, Rush Limbaugh opened his broadcast with James Brown's I feel good. We remember listening to that broadcast driving back to school after voting in New York. Full disclosure, we voted for Governor Mario Cuomo (no regrets) and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. If you've read The Great Nuclear War of 1975 and its sequels, you knew that.
Election Night 2004 we had the telly on Fox, and were glued to our computer, doing something pretty novel at the time, checking secretary of state voting returns, bouncing back and forth between Florida and Ohio. When Ohio went red that put W at 269 electoral votes. That was it. That was the election. We had a fun and satisfying night.
It'd been a trying afternoon. That afternoon the press leaked exit polls showing Kerry leading. There followed a furious effort by right blogosphere and talk radio (Rush again) and Hannity, to debunk the exits. Newt Gingrich, whom readers will recall from above, knew a thing or two about winning elections, was on the air and talking to bloggers, arguing that the numbers were crap. And so they were.
It's finally sinking in. Joy but also, relief.
Which brings us to this post's title. Two-one-Two, for those of you not blessed to be living in the New York metropolitan area*, is the area code for Manhattan. It was also our election legacy fear. Think about it two-one-two. Two Obama victories, one Trump victory, and then two Biden/Harris victories. Think about all that implies. Had Kamala won, Trump would truly have been a fluke. And the GOP too. No longer. After his resounding victory, Trump is the norm and Kamala is the fluke. And don't get us started on her weirdo veep selection.
*[You regularly call for Governor Murphy to destroy the Hudson River crossings-Ed].
