Trump to NATO: Drop Dead

To paraphrase Colonel Nathan Jessup, Europe lives under the blanket of protection we provide and then questions the way we provide it.

To ripoff the esteemed M Steyn, Europe brags about its social safety net and free healthcare* but has these institutions becuase of the military might of the United States. The Euros didn't have to pay for carrier battlegroups or fight communism in Asia.

In this week's NATO summit Trump demanded NATO members spend 2% of their budgets on defense and eventually up that number to 4%. This seems more about readiness than anything else. We doubt a bunch of chocolate making Walloons are ready to purchase hundreds of upgraded Leopard tanks. As noted yesterday, the Krauts are not ready.

Trump went on to criticize Germany, accusing the Krauts of hypocrisy for worrying about Russia but being dependent on Russian natural gas. Anyone else see those Gazprom adds during the World Cup? If you're concerned about Russia, up your defense budget and find someplace else to get your natural gas.**

In putting rhetorical pressure on the Euro-weenies, Trump asks a question asked by millions of Americans. What good is NATO? What do we get from this alliance other than token military commitments and cultural scorn?

Don't be fooled reader(s). America has only ever had and will only ever have one ally in Europe:
*Check those wait times folks You're getting what you're paying for.
**Israel is building a pipeline to Greece, you know. Or is getting energy from the Juden Verbotten?
