Well we realized the other day that we hadn't bought a new suit in at least 5 years and the half dozen we have are warn. In fact our black suit is getting mothbitten.
So we went to our local Men's Warehouse.
The Stroocks are a Brooks Brothers family. We still have in our closet some Brooks Brothers blazers our grandfather bought us after college back in 1998.
But in the last decade the venerable Brooks Brothers decided they didn't want to fit men of our proportions anymore. So Men's Warehouse it is.*
We've always been hard to fit for a suit. We're getting harder to fit for a suit.
Yesterday we measured 52 shoulder, 42 waist. We called bullshit on the 42 as we have a pair of 38 jeans we can almost wear since our little heart thing a few years ago. Anyhow, 52-42, those are some proportions alright.
When we got married 20 years ago we were a 36. The 40-42 range ain't bad. By 2000 we were pushing 275 pounds and actually took a certain pride in that. Eventually We got down to about 250 and these days hover around 260. That's a lot of muscle folks. If we slam a car door too hard we knock the inner siding loose from the door.
Anyway the nice young man measured us up and then asked what color suit we needed.
'Black,' I said.
*There's always Stroock Woolens, and yes, that's our family.
