Tuesday Tally

Greatest Science Fiction Movies

These appear in chronological order. The criteria is the film has to take place in the future and it has to speculate and it has to ask questions of ourselves.*

-Forbidden Planet: Great setup and deep pondering of the implications of technology. Also a super smart species seems pretty cutting edge for 1958.

-2001: Technology meets the gods.

-Planet of the Apes: The roles are reversed to shocking effect, consider your assumptions challenged.

-Soylent Green: The world of 1972is extrapolated fifty years forward. Every prediction is wrong but the setting is chilling.

-Blade Runner: again asks us where all this technology leads and makes us question our own humanity.

-2010: More technology and the gods, this time in the midst of superpower conflict. Actually a better film than its predecessor.

-Independence Day: Very simply, what would we do in the face of alien invasion?

-The Fifth Element: A utopian future. Lots of great style and ambience. Very unique that way.

-Interstellar: Time, perception, love, science set against a ticking clock. Utterly brilliant.

*Star Wars is not science fiction.
