This is the worst school desegregation fight since the Battle of Yonkers.
Yonkers is a midsized town of about 200,000 people just north of New York City. It's a an old working class river town populated by tough Irish and Italians (less so now) who do things like drive UPS trucks and go to church. This guy:
Yonkers' Central Avenue is the town's main drag. In fact, leading all the way up to White Plains it's kind of Westchester County's main drag. We'd go down there in our '86 Celica and cruise with friends. Sometimes you'd get into a race with a Guido**.
Well in 1985 the Feds decided Yonkers was segregating its schools. This was a big deal back in the mid 80's. Growing up 20 minutes north of Yonkers we remember the episode well. Many nights it lead the local news.
The smart set would never go to Yonkers. Gouache is bringing the wrong kind of Chateau Mansion for the Fois Gras, Yonkers is....is....Frankly, we cannot even say how the Manhattan set would describe Yonkers.
And now they're no better.
