Biden in the Well

Even in this day and age the Senate mist certify the election. Here's the Senate doing just that in 2017:

One gets the sense that even the Democrats are enjoying and taking comfort in the act. This is their great Constitutional duty, and we think they're having fun performing it.

We'd also like to draw attention to Vice President Joe Biden. We've had a grudging respect for the man ever since we saw him give an impassioned speech on lifting the Yugoslav arms embargo in 1995. We were an intern at the time for Delaware's other senator, William V. Roth. 'A nation has the right to defend itself!' Biden pled.

We went to school in Delaware and in fact, met Mrs. Stroock there.

Delaware is a small state, of course, but it's even smaller than the map implies. It has three main areas, the Wilmington/Newark north, Dover, and then the beaches in the south. Farming communities and chicken processing plants are scattered throughout. In Delaware everyone knows everyone else. When our mother-in-law died everyone we dealt with, cops, EMTs, hotel managers, funeral home directors said, 'You know she was my teacher...' It became a running joke.

People know the politicians too, and are usually on a first name basis with them. Once you're voted in, you're voted in for life.*

We've seen Joe Biden several times in the flesh, usually in a Dover parade. No entourage, just a few staffers holding a banner and maybe a scheduler. He liked to take the train home from DC, usually about a hour and fifteen minute ride. There's no mistaking the man's decency.

*Except our boss, William V. Roth, who was voted out in 2000. His replacement, former governor Tom Carper, is still there.
