A New Jersey school district canceled classes on Monday after teachers went on strike over issues including health care costs. Thanks to Governor Christie, teachers in NJ contribute 7.5 % of their salaries to their healthcare costs. These teachers want the Franklin Lakes BOE to pick up some of the tab.
The Franklin Lakes Education Association voted to strike Monday morning, the state teachers' union NJEA said in a statement on its website.
"Without meaningful relief from the crushing cost of imposed health care contributions, current district educators cannot afford to continue working and prospective educators will not be willing to come to Franklin Lakes," NJEA's leadership said in the statement.
The average teacher's salary in Franklin Lakes is $62,108.
That's the average.
This strike seems like bad timing to us. It's June, afterall, and nobody is really learning anything anymore anyway.
Teachers in Texas would kill for 62K a year...
