But let's be honest. Would it have made a difference if we'd maintained a corps HQ in Baghdad, a Marine MEU in Anbar and an Army brigade along the rat lines leading to Iran? Could engineers and civil affair teams have countered Iranian influence?
Probably not.
Iraq is majority Shia and a lot smaller than Iran. Gravity dictates the nation will fall into the Iranian sphere. Unless it's run by a secular Sunni strongman.
This blog is close to declaring the Iraq campaign a mistake.
