What Will's Watching: Uncut Gems

Adam Sandler can act? Adam Sandler can act! Adam Sandler is Howard Ratner, in the role he was born to play. Howard is a sleazy, obnoxious, degenerate gambler and jeweler,  whose always in over his head. Howard's always placing bets, he's always on the edge, he's always using one debt to payoff the next. He's always talking, always talking himself out of a jam. This film is absolutely loaded with great actors giving great performances. Idina Menzel as Howard's fed up wife. Eric Boghossian as his bookie brother-in-law, Judd Hirsch (!) as the family patriarch, and on and on. Kevin Garnett plays himself. We don't know if he can act, but we do know we liked Kevin Garnett in this role. Uncut Gems has a very interesting aesthetic, retro, at times it almost feels like Purple Rain. The Jewish smarm is everywhere. Thank Hashem we're nothing like these people. Brilliant. Just Brilliant. 4/4
