We have read through The Weser's Confederate section. All that remains is to read the epilogue, and to write the acknowledgements.
Despite four different shots, Tony Fauci has Covid. You hate to see it. Thoughts and prayers.
Lots of Russian traffic this morning. Come on, guys. Drop me a line on VK.
This blog's big takeaway from the January 6th hearing is that Trump failed to Stop the Steal. Another reason to look elsewhere in 2024.
Fred Kaplan points out that Russia is winning the war: 'After a string of tactical defeats, the Russian army is making some headway in its campaign to capture the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, site of the war’s deadliest fighting. Its troops have taken nearly all of the region’s northern district, known as Luhansk, and all but surrounded the town of Severodonetsk. Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops are exhausted, with 100 to 200 dying daily. While this is true of Russian troops as well, the Ukrainians are running out of ammo.'
Meanwhile the ruble is rising, and Russia is raking in billions selling oil to India and China. How's the US economy doing? We checked the Dow futures this morning and yikes! The Dow's gonna drop out of the 30's today, isn't it?
We corresponded with a Russian contact in Moscow about the war. Our contact, let's call him Ivan, is cynical and pessimistic. Though Ivan has not said so, we have reason to believe he is against the Ukraine War. Ivan dismissed our questions about Putin's health with a very Russian wave and said essentially, 'People have been saying that about glorious Russian war leader for a decade. Now bring me bottle of vodka. Why are you saving the cap?'. It's possible we added the 'war leader' bit. Also the part about the vodka.
Moving on to the Thursday downer...
The great Adam Piggot writes about a crazy ex-girlfriend. We were struck by this detail: 'On the first morning after her arrival I went to use my bathroom, only to discover that I could barely open the door for all of the medical containers that she had stashed on every available space. She must have been taking at least a half dozen different medications, which upon examination turned out to be all for ridiculous made up medical neuroticisms.'
We nod along in comprehension. Not so long ago we took, count 'em, three medications. An anti-depressant, a mood regulator, and something I'll call a booster to help both. Even so we were cranky, moody, irritable. One night we got fed up and smashed an electric guitar, rockstar style. Afterwords, we wondered why the hell we were taking three different medications. We told our doctor that we didn't think the cocktail was working, and her response was to prescribe yet another pill. We held up a hand and said, 'Whoa!' We told her where three pills failed four is not the answer.
We're bipolar, what they used to call manic depressive. There's no getting around it. Which means you're really up and then really down. The highs are usually not as high as the lows are low.
We weened ourselves off two of the medications. The weening was not unlike detox. We'd wake up late at night with the shakes. And look up brain-zaps. Heh, there was a time when we paid good money for that sensation.
We're down to one pill, which we take to knock us out at night. We think after years of unemployment induced insomnia, we're allowed a treat.
Ironically, given the stent in our artery, this pill raises cholesterol. The last time we got bloodwork done, our triglycerides were in the 450 range, still well into the danger zone but waaaaay down from their peak in late 2015, a thousand +, and down a third in the last year. Not bad. Hmmm...what are the side effects of all those cholesterol, triglyceride and blood pressure meds?
