Will's Good Idea for the Week of 10/23/23

We had a birthday party yesterday resulting in the house being overrun by10 and 11-year-old girls. Lots of gabbing and giggling and screaming and more gabbing, etc etc. Mrs. Stroock wins the wonder-mom award.

Last night the Eagles beat the offense minded Dolphins 31-17. Philadelphia is the best team in the NFC with a great line on both sides of the ball. The Eagles are big, strong, and tough. Offense draws crowds, defense wins championships, even in the 2020s.* Those kelly-green throwback jerseys were weird. The Eagles haven't worn those since the mid-90s. We kept waiting for a 'Cunningham hands to Walker' call.

Our own Giants, also in throwback jerseys, beat the Redskins. This blog hates the Redskins and loves it when they lose. 'I hate the Redskins. Oh, yes I do. And Danny Snyder. Go to hell, fuck you.' [He doesn't own the team anymore -Ed]. We don't care.

Our 13-year-old enjoyed watching Taylor Swift's boyfriend vs the Chargers yesterday. The network ought to have a Taylor-cam box in the corner of the screen, so those interested know what she's doing at all times. Taylor Swift is bigger than the NFL.

Multiple published reports say Israel has delayed the Gaza ground offensive at Washington's urging. Does it matter? Probably not. Has Joe been great on Israel? No, his statements on the crisis are moral gobbledygook filled with State Department word salad. State is facing a minirevolt of young staffers crying in their soy non-fat lattes about the admin's pro-Israel posture. How much longer will the grownups be in charge at Foggy Bottom? Great? No. Good enough? Yes. More planeloads of American equipment arrive today.

In the meantime, the IDF is skirmishing with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Every time one of Hezbollah's terrorists is killed, they publish glamour shots of the man in camo, holding a rifle, etc etc. Their PR strategy appears to be, 'Our guys are better looking.' We're not joking.  The Israelis are also attacking Hamas targets in Judea and Samaria. Israel War Room reports, 'Since the beginning of the war: 800 wanted persons have been arrested throughout Judea and Samaria - including 500 Hamas operatives.'

The delayed offensive allows for more urban and tunnel warfare training.  Remember, the IDF called up 360,000 reservists. During the delay the Israelis can acquire more Iron Dome interceptors and maybe even deploy Iron Beam. The IAF can also soften Hamas targets. Older reader(s) will recall the weeks long aerial campaign over Iraq and Kuwait in 1991. Maybe we're fools, but it seems to Stroock's Books that the Israelis are prepping the battlespace. You know what the imams say.

However repeat after us, the Israelis are not supermen. Say it again, the Israelis are not supermen. Don't believe us? We were just reminded of Israeli fallibility on October 7th, weren't we? The IDF will make mistakes, fall into Hamas traps, accidently bomb a civilian target. The Israeli army will take thousands of casualties. Repeat after us, the Israelis are not supermen.

Our people have World War 1990: The Final Storm. We're terrified. We're leaning towards a white cover with a black silhouette of the Kremlin. We must needs write the back text today.

This week we'll finish the readthrough of World War 1990: Norway. We'll see just what we have here and figure out just what we need to do to the MS. We may write the destruction of the Soviet Northern Fleet in an epilogue chapter. We may write a lot about damage control on REDACTED.

We spent some time thinking about what we're writing next year. We had a few ideas for our nuclear war short story compilation. Given sales, this may be the best way to go. We also wondered if there's a side project we'd like to write. See for example, Blooms. [What about the Red Dawn Thingy?-Ed] Yeah sure. But we're wondering how we'd write the Red Dawn Thingy. Do we really need/want to write about armored formations, air raids, furious cabinet meetings, etc etc? We do? Oh, okay.

Always we feel (internal) pressure to begin the next World War 1990 project. Sticking with our one forward (The Final Storm) one back (Norway) policy, our next WW1990 novel would be Thatcher's War, which would begin immediately after the events of TFS. [Why do you want to invade Ireland so badly?-Ed]
