Will's Good Idea for the Week of 1/21/24

Good frigid Sunday morn, Stroock's Books Commune.

An excellent contest last night between the Packers of Green Bay and the 49rs of San Francisco. Tense, with lots of lead changes.

We got to the gym yesterday (that's two in a row) and did some lifting. The shoulder felt good. Now it feels sore. We shall stretch and will probably hit the gym for cardio this morning.

We posted this excellent Mark Steyn article about the useless GOP on our FB 8 years ago. In 2016 they blew a hundred million quid on Jeb Bush. They've just blown another hundred million on Ron Desantis. Everything in Steyn's article is still true. Honestly, will we even bother to vote? [You keep threatening not to vote, but then you always do-Ed]. Exit question, if DeSantis couldn't tell the GOPe professional consultant class to get lost, losers, was he really the man to take on the regime?

Stroock's Books supposes it should comment on the Sports Illustrated implosion. And so we shall:

Those are the SI covers from the 1991 Giants vs 49rs NFC Championship Game, and Super Bowl XXV. Here's some background on the Super Bowl cover, courtesy of the NY Giants. We've had those covers for 33 years now. They're two of our most prized possessions, saved because like every other household interested in sports, we had a subscription to SI. Yeah, SI mattered. It's Sports Illustrated week all week at Stroock's Books.

Will's Good Idea for the Week of 1/21/24....it occurs to us that World War 1990: The Afghan Campaign doesn't have to happen during World War Three. We think we've only mentioned Afghanistan once in the entire series and it seems odd that a Muj revolt wouldn't come up in conversation someplace*. TAF could be a post war book. One possible theme is Soviet redemption. Maybe Colonel Timonen, one of the important Soviet Desatnik characters in World War 1990: Norway, is posted to Kabul. We like Timonen a lot.

We are quite anxious to begin writing about the post WW1990 world. Of course, World War 1990: Thatcher's War comes first. Alert readers who've finished World War 1990: The Final Storm, have probably realized what Thatcher's War is about and where it will be fought. Expect to see Ingham in Boston. We don't care much about the Yankees anymore, but we still hate Boston and everything in it. Anyway, the deck will be cleared by the end of this week. Let's spend this week thinking about Thatcher's War during dance taxi. You never know.

*We pay attention to past events, and have people we ask, 'What was the thing, with the guy, in the place?' But we are not beholden to canon. If we must needs bend the canon to write something we want to write, then canon will necessarily be bent. We've done that in World War 1990: Norway with our Norwegian sub. Does it really matter that we wrote previously that Una sunk two frigates and two destroyers and have her sinking, say, a cruiser in Norway? Do note, we bend canon, we don't break it. Una doesn't sink a Kirov. That'd be a big, big deal.
