Will's Good Idea for the Week of 3/3/24

If reader(s) are wondering why the IDF has been relatively quiet in Gaza lately, now we know. Last night the IDF's 98th Division began a large ground op in western Khan Younis in conjunction with a series of 50 air strikes conducted within a few minutes.

The Times of Israel has an interesting report this morning on widespread Israeli ops in Gaza. The IDF seems to be fighting everywhere, all at once. Israel Radar notes that a US urban guerilla warfare expert is highly impressed with the IDF in Gaza. We ourselves are surprised that Israeli casualties aren't much, much higher. What don't we know about how the IDF is fighting in Gaza and what are the unknown unknowns?

One week remains till Israel's Ramadan deadline. Don't ask us how negotiations are going or what will happen. Current guess: deal.

Okay, so we're writing a short story imagining the Poncho Via campaign of 1916 turned into a full-scale invasion of Mexico, something Pershing wanted to do, and the US stayed out of the Great War, something the US should have done. This story is about a major who's been in northern Mexico for two years fighting a counterinsurgency. He's a grizzled and tired horse soldier. Now here comes Captain Patton with a half dozen of these mechanical contraptions...This story may or may not be in the universe of The Austrian Painter.

And once we had this good idea the good ideas the good ideas kept coming. But still no ideas for War Night. Huh. Bottom line we've cleared some mental space to think about other projects. We'd really like to come up with something new and different for the summer sneak in.

Readers know we plan to publish one World War 1990 novel a year. We're going to stick with that plan. But we're not starting Thatcher's War now or this summer. As we wrap up World War 1990: Norway, we're sick of that universe, for now. No, we'll begin Thatcher's War in the autumn.
