Will's Good Idea for the Week of 7/21/24

Good morning from the beach. We write in the morning shade, a cool breeze coming off the Atlantic making for a pleasant ambience.

The weather yesterday was hazy, then cloudy, and finally rainy in the evening. But we got in our requisite beach and pool time. Today the weather will be glorious.

So....the Israelis attacked the Houthis, making for some big bang-bangs. Good. A Houthis statement promised a 'hard' retaliation and went on with great rhetorical flourish for several paragraphs. The more bellicose the Arab's rhetoric, the more impotent he actually is. [Really, you wanna talk smack after 10/7?-Ed] This morning we see the Houthis launched a ballistic missile at Eilat. The Israelis shot it down. A test?

Will's Good Idea for the week of 7/21/24 - from the beach...

While contemplating the ocean, we thought of a few things to add to the Haig story in War Night. First, Haig recounts to himself how things began. Second, they watch the BBC or maybe its Belgian equivalent to try to find out what's happening. Hmmm wouldn't the Belgian equivalent of the BBC be broadcast in Belgian? [Oh my god,-Ed].

We also had a thought about World War 1990: Thatcher's War. Fun fact: per-capita we're more popular in the UK than the USA. God save the King. So it's very important to get things right in Thatcher's War. We're prepared and we'll go and we'll do our best, as Ireland National Football team coach Jack Charleton said. But what if some fellow who was in the IRA reads Thatcher's War and doesn't like it? What if he takes great offense? See what we're getting at? [You mailed copies of Israel Strikes to the Iranian mission to the UN and their embassy in London-Ed].

Even a cursory study of The Troubles reveals these wounds are very raw, for the Catholics, for the Protestants, and for the British army. We shall proceed with caution and write with great circumspectitude [Not a word-Ed].
