Happy Donald Trump Day, Stroock's Books presidential enthusiasts. Bridgewater being a patriotic town filled with patriotic Americans, the girls are off from school. We anticipate significant dad-taxi duty today as the girls will need transportation to various social events.
You're top five presidents, in chronological order are Washington, Lincoln, TR, FDR, and Reagan.
You're next five presidents, also in chronological order are Polk, McKinley, Truman, Eisenhower, and Geroge W. Bush.*
America has suffered two of our five worst presidents this century, thanks Barry and Joe. No wonder the country's a mess. The other three bad presidents are Adams, Buchanan and Hoover.
Reminder, no president is as great as we think he is. Lincoln lost many battles. FDR badly blundered at Yalta. Reagan had the Iran Contra mess.
No president is as bad as we think he is. Jimmy Carter was a terrible president, and we can still think of four or five good things he did, starting with warning the Kremlin against cracking down on Solidarity.
Your greatest British Prime Ministers? Well, Thatcher obviously. Also Disraeli, Gladstone, Palmerston, and Pitt the Elder. We seem to be drifting into that group of anti-establishment types that doesn't think Churchill was as great as people make him out to be. We'll never say a bad word about Mr. Blair**, not ever, but every British PM this century has been a complete tosser. Keir Starmer is pure, distilled leftist mendacity. One day he will burn but for now he runs Britain.
We must consult our fellow North American on great Canadian Prime Ministers. Of course, Justin is just the worst. Years ago our late FBF Kathy Shaidle sent us a McClean's rundown of Canada's PMs. They all seemed quietly competent until Pierre Trudeau came along.
Yesterday we read through half a dozen scenes in World War 1990: Thatcher's War, tidying things up and making sure things make sense. So far so good. We'll be doing more of the same today and writing a couple of new scenes.
* W was a good president. Upon this hill we will die. Handling 9/11, liberating Afghanistan, winning the Iraq War, handling the financial crisis.
**One must needs have been around in the days after 9/11 to understand, one supposes. Thank you, Mr. Blair.
Jackson then Reagan then Washington Then TR and Jefferson
