Good afternoon, reader(s). We are annoyed and cranky because the Indian tele-scammers keep calling us. Should we ring up the Indian embassy in Washington again and demand they put a stop to the scam calls? We shouldn't? Okay. Our right ankle is sore. This Charlotte thing has us pretty ticked off too. Who's up for some career ending commentary? Not me...not me...[Wuss-Ed].
Looks like the Israelis missed in Qatar. Dang it. Message delivered nevertheless. The Jews did bomb them some Houthis today though.
Beat the Mets...Beat the Mets...so that team that in 1986 barely beat the inferior Boston Red Sox in the World Series went into 1987 with high hopes. The Mets front office made some big changes. The Mets traded team thug Kevin Mitchell to San Diego in a blockbuster deal for power hitting outfielder Kevin McReynolds. World Series MVP Ray Knight left for mediocre Baltimore. Pitching ace Dwight Gooden began the year suspended because of his coke habit.
The Mets got off to a rough start but rallied after the All-Star break. Gooden returned. New third basemen Howard Johnson had a great year clubbing 36 homers and stealing 30 bases. Daryl Strawberry had a career year hitting 34 homruns, stealing 30 bases, and batting in 104. The Mets closed with the first place Cardinals till they were just two and a half games out of first. Then came a big three game series with the Cardinals beginning September 11th. Just like in 1985 the Mets couldn't beat the cards (damn you, Terry Pendleton) and lost two of three. And that was it for the 1987 Mets.
The cracks in the Mets' facade of greatness grew larger.
