Cold in the morning, text in the back

Baah, the cold remains but is getting better, we think.

Lots of rain last night into this morning. We checked and the new four inch drainpipe we installed for the sump-line is holding just fine, so no water buildup under the porch.

The Critical Drinker, who is always right, notes that The Force Awakens came out ten years ago this week - and nobody cares. Which is odd for a film that grossed $2 + billion and launched half a dozen other movies and god-only-knows how many Star Wars TV shows. We liked it and gave it a B +. We've seen it, maybe two other times in the last decade, maybe. We don't have to stop and watch if we see TFA on the telly. Over the long term TFA is mid, thoroughly mediocre, which makes it better than The Last Jedi. We haven't even bothered to watch The Rise of Sky Walker.

Meanwhile, Film Threat holds a very long funeral for Star Trek. We used to watch TOS at midnight on Channel-11 WPIX during our summers. Later we devoured TNGWe got into TNG in 1990. It inspired us to do what we're doing now. There's a reason why our second novel is about aliens invading earth. No TNG, no Will the author. That's it. Deep Space-9 and Voyager were decent, and got started without the horrible awkwardness of TNG's first two seasons. When the time slots changed in the late 90s we didn't bother to find them. Neither show was as good as TNG and we were in a new phase of our life, anyway

In the end, 90s Trek, as the three shows are sometimes called, is about highly skilled professionals, absolute experts in their fields, doing their jobs and finding solutions to problems. It is often said Star Trek inspired thousands of scientists. But this blog bets Star Trek also created thousands of naval officers. Heck, we started going by our first name, William, partly because of Commander William Riker. Who wouldn't want to the XO of a Galaxy class starship, flying amongst the stars and shagging space-babes?

Jews on Shabbat: A new poll in The Jerusalem Post has the Naftali Bennett' led opposition winning 60 seats in the 120 seat Knesset. At the moment it looks like the Opposition would have to bring in an Arab party to form a government. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The Israel nation's relationship with its Arab citizens...needs work, shall we say? Other issue remain Haredi military service, the Haredi grip on Israeli religious life, and wildcat settlers in Judea/Samaria.

The tone of the JPost story is downright triumphant. If one is inclined to support Netanyahu, calm down. The election season hasn't even begun yet. Who's to say what Bibi will be able to achieve during a campaign. While we're inclined to support Bibi, him winning another election would piss off all the right people, a Bennett victory would not be disastrous, see above. For those interested a very interesting discussion here with Dan Senor about the Israeli political dynamic, only-Bibi vs never-Bibi. It's just like America, ain't it?
