Magnificent? Lets say Good.

Alert reader(s) probably noticed we're on a Magnificent Seven kick.

Last night we watch the remake starting the esteemed Denzel Washington, the finest actor of our age.

We thought the film was OK, which ain't bad for a modern Hollywood remake.

This remake also scene-checks [scene-checks? -Ed] yes scene-checks from various other westerns.

We saw the warehouse from the gunfight at the end of Rio Bravo. The scene where Denzel and the guys are teaching the villagers how to shoot comes out of the original, or hell, Robin Hood (the Kevin Costner one).

Denzel plays Yule Brenner, but black rather than Jewish, obviously.

We noticed this film has a of other ticks, tributes, homages and outright ripoffs from other westerns.

[You're one to talk about ripping off scenes, just wait till they see what you did in Anzacs-Ed]

For example, Chris Pine plays Clint Eastwood in any spaghetti western one wants to name.

Ethan Hawke  (usually a name to make us run away screaming) plays Val Kilmer in Tombstone. Also he is named Goodnight Robicheaux, which seems to be an homage to Paul Regret from John Wayne's The Comincheros, not to mention Yule Brenner again, who was supposed to be a Cajun in the original.

The guys at Red Letter Media like to call this fan service. Why not?
