Final (unofficial) Summer Post

School starts tomorrow.

Reviewing The Rings of PowerThe Irish Times complains, 'the portrayal of “Irish” characters as pre-industrial and childlike – simpletons, really – threads neatly into the Anglosphere’s rich tapestry of disdain for Celtic peoples. It brings us all the way back to the 70s – the 1870s. There’s an early scene in which we see the Harfoots, wearing filthy rags, scrabble in the ground for food. What is this, Famine cosplay?' Good. This blog has never liked the Irish and resents human rights lectures from people that on the great events of the 20th century (WWII for example), didn't have a strong opinion either way.*

Reviewer Ed Power goes on at some length about the Hobbits' Irish accents and stereotypical Irish behavior. I know what that means in the United States, and grew up down the street from an Irish family where the two youngest (and closest) brothers fought constantly,  one of whom was the best man at my wedding. What were Tolkien's Irish stereotypes? We asked our man on the ground in Ireland about the article and he replied, 'I mean he is correct, it's very offensive but still very good.' They say Tolkien didn't like the Jews either.**

We have no plans to watch The Rings of Power.

Monday Metal (Supplemental). It seems like a certain Asian dictator has a favorite song. You may be metal, but you'll never be as metal as the North Korean Military Orchestra playing, well...you'll just have to watch it to believe it:

'Killing in the name of!' There are Scandinavian deth metal bands who saw this and said, 'Time to pack it in, Ulf. We'll never top this. Compared to the Norks, we sound like an English Skiffle band.' Well done, Kim! Now do Pocket Full of Shells.

Looking at sales this month and last, eight of our top ten sellers are World War 1990 books. One need not be a genius to conclude one should continue writing World War 1990 books. The Final Storm is going to be a big book.

*The IRA will make Maggie very, very angry at the end of World War 1990: The Final Storm, the subject of...Let's just say 3 Commando is going to go on a Dublin pub crawl. And remember, Our MI-5 man, Ingham, used to interrogate IRA prisoners. Heh, it's gonna be a fun one.

**We've only ever read one of Tolkien's books, and very halfheartedly so.
